✅Standards and Expectations

In our class, we follow high standards for learning, growth, and personal responsibility. Below is an overview of the academic skills your child will develop and the expectations I have to help them succeed in 5th grade.

Aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS)

Reading & Foundational Skills

  • Decode and spell complex words using phonics, syllables, roots, and word parts

  • Read grade-level texts fluently and with expression

  • Use context clues and self-correction strategies during reading


Writing & Language Skills

  • Write clear, complete sentences using proper grammar and punctuation (including commas)

  • Use precise word choice and academic vocabulary in both writing and speech

  • Understand and use figurative language (similes, idioms, etc.)

  • Use dictionaries, glossaries, and other tools to learn word meanings


Reading Comprehension & Critical Thinking

  • Quote accurately from texts to explain and infer meaning

  • Identify theme or main idea, and support it with key details

  • Compare and contrast characters, settings, and ideas across texts

  • Analyze text structure and point of view


Writing Projects & Process

  • Write opinion pieces supported by facts and clear reasoning

  • Create informational reports using facts, text features, and strong organization

  • Develop narrative stories with dialogue, clear sequence, and vivid details

  • Follow the full writing process: plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish

  • Use credible sources to research, summarize, and cite information


Speaking & Listening Skills

  • Engage respectfully in class discussions and build on others' ideas

  • Follow discussion norms and ask questions to deepen understanding

  • Summarize information from texts, audio, and visuals

  • Present ideas clearly using logic, supporting details, and multimedia when needed

  • Adjust tone and style for different audiences and situations


Classroom Expectations from Ms. Doyle

In our classroom, students are expected to:

  • Be responsible – Take charge of your learning and actions

  • Be respectful – Treat classmates, teachers, and school property kindly

  • Be accountable – Own your work, behavior, and mistakes

  • Complete assignments on time – Ask for help if you need it

  • Read daily – Reading regularly builds strong skills

  • Develop study habits – Stay organized and focused

  • Write with stamina – Expect to write essays of 5+ paragraphs

  • Follow the writing process – Plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish

  • Avoid distractions – Help create a focused learning space

  • Take pride in your work – Review before turning things in

  • Track your progress – Reflect and celebrate growth

  • Set learning goals – Work toward them with my support

  • Ask questions – Be curious and take initiative in your learning

  • Collaborate well – Be a helpful and kind team member
