At Upper Elementary School, we are committed to helping every student reach their full potential. One of the ways we do this is through our REI Block, which stands for Respond, Enrich, Intervene. This dedicated period occurs during the school day and is intentionally designed to support the academic growth of all students through small group instruction, targeted enrichment, and personalized intervention.
The REI Block is a cornerstone of our instructional model, allowing teachers to respond to student needs in real time. Whether a student requires additional practice on a key skill or is ready to dive deeper into a concept, the REI Block ensures they receive the right support at the right time.
Rooted in the Professional Learning Community (PLC) model, the REI Block reflects our collective belief that all students can learn at high levels — but not always in the same way or on the same day. During this time:
-
Tier 2 interventions are delivered in small groups to students who need some extra help mastering grade-level standards.
-
Tier 3 interventions are provided more intensively, often in smaller groups or one-on-one, for students who need significant support to close learning gaps.
This block is not “extra” or “remedial”—it’s part of our commitment to providing high-quality, differentiated instruction to every learner. Our teachers collaborate in weekly PLC meetings to review student progress data and adjust REI plans to ensure timely, effective support.
By protecting this time in the schedule, we ensure no student misses core instruction and every student receives the targeted help or enrichment they need. It’s just one way we fulfill our mission to promote Perseverance, Pride, and Purpose in every learner, every day.
