This website is a great tool for book/author recommendations based on what you type in. For example, type in the title of a book you liked, and this site will give you recommendations of similar genres. Goodreads.com functions this way as well. Happy reading

Upon reading Growing Up in Coal Country, they mention an old Philadelphia Athletics player named Joe Boley. He grew up working the mines and playing in the small games the different Patch Villages had for entertainment.

Assignment: Read and look at pictures on the link below. Use your reading notebook to reflect on the life of a child in the coal mines before Child Labor Laws came into affect. Some questions to think about:
~Why do you think some parents encouraged their children to work in the mines?
~Was life hard as a coal miner? Why or why not?
~What was life like in the patch villages? Describe a bit about it and then reflect on what you think could have been different (what kids of changes could have been made to make life easier for the immigrants?)
