📘 Welcome to 4th Grade at UES
Fourth grade is a year of growth, independence, and deeper learning! At Upper Elementary School, our 4th grade program is designed to build strong academic foundations while supporting students' transition to a more departmentalized structure.
🧑🏫 Classroom Structure
Students are assigned one homeroom teacher who will teach the core subjects:
Students will also receive small group Reading instruction with a dedicated reading teacher, different from their homeroom teacher. This structure allows for targeted support and acceleration based on student reading needs.
📚 Core Content Focus & Standards
Fourth grade instruction is aligned to New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). Key essential standards include:

Reading: Understanding main ideas, summarizing texts, making inferences, and supporting thinking with text evidence.

Writing: Developing well-structured opinion pieces, informative writing, and narratives with clear organization and detail.

Math: Building fluency with multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; understanding fractions and place value; and solving multi-step word problems.

Science & Social Studies: These subjects rotate, allowing students to dive deeper into each content area across the year.
💡 One of the most important skills for success in 4th grade math is automatic recall of basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Regular practice at home is encouraged to help students grow their math fluency and confidence!
