Student Dress Code (Grades 4–6)

The North Hanover Township Board of Education respects students' individuality and personal style. However, student dress and grooming must support a safe, respectful, and distraction-free learning environment. The following guidelines apply to students in grades 4 through 6 and should be used to help determine appropriate school attire.

General Expectations

  • Students should come to school dressed in a way that supports learning, movement, and safety throughout the day.

  • All clothing should be clean, appropriately fitted, and allow students to participate in all school activities comfortably.

Prohibited Clothing

To maintain a positive and respectful school climate, the following types of clothing are not permitted:

  • Midriff-baring tops (e.g., crop tops, half-shirts)

  • Strapless, halter, mesh, tube tops, or low-cut shirts

  • Shirts with overly large armholes or deep-cut sides

  • Sheer or see-through garments

  • Shorts, skirts, or dresses that are shorter than fingertip length

  • Clothing that is excessively tight, baggy, or revealing

  • Shirts tied up to be midriff.

Footwear Expectations

  • Flip-flops, slides, or beach-style sandals are not permitted.

  • Footwear must be secure and safe for stairs, playgrounds, and emergency drills.

  • Open-toed shoes with back straps are acceptable if they provide adequate support.

Other Restrictions

  • Outdoor wear such as hats, hoods, sunglasses, and jackets may not be worn indoors unless approved by the principal for medical or religious reasons.

  • Clothing with inappropriate language, images, or references to alcohol, drugs, violence, or obscenity is not allowed.

  • Pajamas or loungewear are not appropriate for the school day unless designated for a special event.

Special Notes

  • Students attending school-sponsored events (e.g., concerts, field trips, dances) are expected to follow the same dress guidelines.

  • Exceptions to this policy may be granted for religious or medical reasons with prior approval.
